Rare earth element, yttrium, and other major element release from monazite is enhanced by citrate, oxalate, and phthalate, and REY concentrations in solution generally increase as a function of ligand concentration (Fig. 7, Fig. 8 and Table 6). Similar to the apatite experiments, ligand presence in solution increases REY release one to two orders of magnitude, with the exception of salicylate which reduced monazite dissolution relative to ligand-free controls.
